Land in Sicht [English translation]
Land in Sicht [English translation]
It was a clear sunny day, ship's prow waded through the sea, we made progress;
as there on the horizon a large deep black hole opened up.
Despite the stormy North Sea1, Klabautermann2, it seemed to me, was brewing something out there.
Do not let him, or he will take us one by one.
The captain has done the navigation, but it is far to the next harbor.
And with a firm look he is determined to keep the course, straight into it;
where the lightning strikes through the clouds, rain pelts us all in the face.
And far and wide it is ever the same, no land in sight.
But such a watery sailor's grave, is far too early if you ask us, no matter which god we believe in. Think of my girl in the city, how she waits day after day and how she cries alone at night.
"That brings me to... Hey ho Pullman tow, Pullman tow the wind will blow, hey ya ho now come and pull my tow."
Deafening is the noise that now surrounds us here, a shrill cry and thousand deep groans as if the boat is breaking up.
The cold wet wall of water breaks suddenly over our ship,
and hits the plank and the whole forest, short and small.
But such a watery...
"That brings me to... Hey..."
And with the first ray of sunshine, we were fully awake, on board it was peaceful and quiet, past was the night, squinting we looked each other in the eye, as from the crow's nest the call comes... "Land ahoy!"
"Hey Hoe..."
1. Blanker Hans is apparently a personification of the stormy North Sea.2. Klabautermann is a mythical creature, a kobold who may help or harm sailors. Actually setting eyes on his person means you are doomed.
