‘Charlie’s Angels 3’? Director McG Is Open to It, Says Drew Barrymore Stood Up to Sony Execs Who Wanted Him Fired Off Original Film1

Might Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu reunite for a third Charlies Angels movie? McG, the trios franchise director, recently told Entertainment Weekly that he would be more than open to making that sequel. The filmmaker directed the three actors in 2000s Charlies Angels and 2003s Charlies Angels: Full Throttle, which combined to over $520 million at the worldwide box office. The franchise was rebooted on the big screen in 2019 with the Elizabeth Banks-directed Charlies Angels, but the film flopped and didnt cross the $100 million mark.

It would take a long discussion with those three wonderful performers who I adore, McG said while discussing his openness to a third Charlies Angels movie. I was very happy to see Elizabeth Banks take the helm and do what she did, which was fun. There always seems to be chatter about that. Im very happy to discuss it with Drew and Cameron and Lucy, but at the same time, Im very happy to pass the torch. I mean, I love the Tim Burton Batman movies, I love the new Batman movies. Its just sort of like there can be a keeper of the flame and you can pass the torch.

McG continued, Who knows? Maybe weve got one left in us that tells a very compelling story if the opportunity presents itself. I love the three of them so much. They put me on the map. They looked out for me when I was a first-time filmmaker. I was very nearly fired off that film on many, many occasions, and Drew stood up for me and Im forever indebted to her. And obviously, those are three performers where God broke the mold. They dont make em like that. I mean, those are three special ones.

The first Charlies Angels movie marked McGs feature directorial debut. He told Entertainment Weekly that Sony Pictures execs werent exactly thrilled with all of his crazy directing choices, which led to threats of his firing.

The movie was insane at the time, McG said. [Former Sony executive] Amy Pascal would come down and go, What? Am I supposed to laugh? Am I supposed to take it seriously? Why is there so much color? Why are they always dancing? Why is there so much music? I said, Amy, you got to trust me. Its all going to come together in the end. And to her credit, she trusted me, yes, but by the skin of my teeth.

Barrymore herself said last year that she would do a third Charlies Angels movie in a heartbeat, adding, I would be surprised if any one of us ever decreed that we wouldnt [do a third movie]. I would The answer is an emphatic yes. I will always say yes.
