Uomini soli [English translation]
Uomini soli [English translation]
You meet them where people
travel and go to make phone calls,
with aftershave that smells of rain
and the briefcase,
lost inside the "Corriere della Sera"1
in the back and forth of a waitress.
But why, every day evening comes?
At times a man is alone
because, in his head, he has strange notions,
because he's afraid of sex
or for the craving for success,
to write the novel he has inside,
because life has already placed him against the wall,
or because, in a false world,
he's a true man.
God of the cities and of the immensity,
if it's true that you exist and have travelled more than us,
let's see if this life can be taught,
and, at least, change it a bit before it changes us.
Let's see if we can get loved as we are
without being violated with neuroses and jealousies,
because this life extends and the extended one
is sleeping or dead or is making love.
There are men who are alone because of a thirst for adventure,
because they studied to be priests,
or for twenty years spent in jail,
because of mothers that have never weaned them,
because of women who revolted and lost them
or just because they are different gods.2
God of the cities and of the immensity,
if it's true that you exist and have travelled more than us,
let's see if these women can be taught
and a bit change them for their sake, and a bit change them for our sake.
But, God of the cities and of the immensity,
perhaps you exist and problems you don't have,
but, down here, we are not in heaven and if a man loses the thread he's only a lonely man.
