‘Maestro’ Scores One of the Best Trailers of the Year in Sweeping Look at Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein Film1

Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan bring Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre to life in the first official trailer for Maestro, premiering in limited theaters on Nov. 22 and arriving on Netflix Dec. 20.

In the trailer, Cooper and Mulligan travel through time as the couple experiences love, betrayal and music. The movie encompasses Bernsteins professional life but glosses over his commercial achievements in favor of focusing on his complicated relationship with Montealegre.

If summer doesnt sing in you then nothing sings in you, Cooper says at the beginning of the trailer as an old man, gently playing the piano. Later on in the trailer, but depicting the young couple decades before, Mulligan finishes the sentence: And if nothing sings in you, then you cant make music.

As the trailer sweeps through the years, and in and out of color, Cooper portrays the legendary American conductor and composer as he plays music in stuffy attics and towering cathedrals.

Cooper directed, co-wrote, produced and starred in Maestro opposite Mulligan, Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis and Gideon Glick. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg also serve as producers alongside Fred Berner, Amy Durning and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Carla Raij, Josh Singer, Bobby Wilhelm, Weston Middleton and Tracey Landon are executive producers. Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton and Miriam Shor also star.

Maestro world premiered on Sept. 2 at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a seven-minute standing ovation, and then served as the spotlight gala film at at New York Film Festival.
