La Paloma [English translation]
La Paloma [English translation]
Since I was born on Dove* Street
They called me that jokingly as a child
And since I fly happily from street to street
The name of Dove they still apply to me today
Even though I don't have a shimmering neck
My hair is always clean and wavy
And even though my poor body has no feathers
It is always fresh and white like foam
In this fairness I'm a dove,
And I skip and jump wherever I go
And always true to my name
I have no claws, I have no gall
In her fairness she is a dove,
And she skips and jumps with great pleasure
And always true to her name,
She doesn't have claws, she doesn't have gall
Since my window is near the sky
And by it doves fly
When I see in the glass that the dawn peeps out
I wish I could take flight just like the doves
But when I see that they are sold in markets
And the poor little ones die in the stove,
I say half seriously, half jokingly:
"There are some inconveniences in being a dove."
In my lullabies a dove am I
For I always sing wherever I go
And always true to my name
I look for a pigeon, I look for a pigeon... Who could he be?
In her lullabies a dove she is
And she always sings with great pleasure
And to her name she is always true
She looks for a pigeon, she looks for a pigeon... Lucky is he!
