Kirk Franklin, Tabitha Brown, Kym Whitley and Yvette Nicole Brown Join Lena Waithe for ABFF Talks Series (EXCLUSIVE)
The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has announced the lineup for this years Talks Series, headlined by 2023 festival ambassador Lena Waithe.
The 27th edition of the festival will be held June 14-18 in Miami Beach, followed by a virtual program June 19-25 on ABFF Play. On Thursday, June 15, the Emmy-winning writer, producer and actor will sit for an intimate one-on-one conversation, billed as The Lena Waithe Effect, where shell recount her journey in the entertainment industry.
In addition to Waithe, the series of conversations and panels also features: Thats Our Business, a candid conversation with Tabitha Brown and her husband Chance Brown; a panel discussion with TV One Networks Kirk and Tammy Franklin (The One) and LisaRaye McCoy (Asking for a Friend a look behind-the-scenes of Bounce TVs Act Your Age starring Kym Whitley and Yvette Nicole Brown; a celebration of hip-hops 50th anniversary with the Xfinity Original Series Hip House and the WBD Access Music Supervisor Panel featuring Morgan Rhodes (The Color Purple) and Carolyn Owens (Cherish the Day).
Warner Bros. Pictures will also debut a first look at the highly-anticipated musical The Color Purple, dubbed A Bold New Take on a Beloved Classic, directed by Blitz Bazawule with an all-star cast led by Fantasia, Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson.
ABFF will also continue to feature its talent discovery programs, which finds emerging artists and introduces them to the entertainment industry. ALLBLKs Shoot Your Shot Casting Call will return, with Lance Gross as this years guest reader. Plus, Bevy Smith returns to host the 26th HBO Short Film Award Showcase, featuring five shorts from emerging filmmakers who compete for the prestigious award. The Best of the ABFF Awards where the independent film awards and talent contest winners will be presented is hosted by Emmy-nominated actor/author Dondr Whitfield.
The in-person program culminates on Sunday, June 18, with its annual ABFF Community Day, which is free and open to all South Florida residents. The event will also include a sneak peek at Oscar winner Matthew Cherrys latest project, the Max animated series, Young Love.
