A la muntagna [English translation]
A la muntagna [English translation]
When the night falls on the mountain
the little sheep trembles with fear
if the wolf sees her, he eats her up
But life is hard for the wolf too
when the shepherd goes a-hunting
and the little sheep sleeps safe.
Up the mountain, the cruelest one
is not the wolf, but the outlaw.
When you see him, make the sign of the cross.
Up the mountain, when the night falls
the shepherd cannot live in peace, either,
when he hears a fearful song,
it's the outlaws singing together.
Those who know them know very well,
they've never liked the Bourbon king
but now they don't know a different story:
they don't like either the Savoy king.
The Bourbon king took to his heels,
a still more powerful king came instead:
governments change, rulers change
but nothing will change for the subjects.
If one doesn't accept this new law
so he has to try and become an outlaw,
but if he goes up the mountains
his life becomes a trial.
Against king Victor's soldiers
now there's only this band fighting
but an outlaw cannot change history
when he fights alone and without hopes.
And when they catch him up the mountain
he dies without fear and without regret,
and when they catch them in the villages
they say: How beautiful dying slain.
