Hlas [English translation]
Hlas [English translation]
In the month of September, when the apples are ripening,
When the light of the moon wove the mantilla of night,
When the hymn sounded at midnight,
That was when I first met Satan.
Satan had the lovely figure of a virgin,
and didn't smell of sulfur, but rather of flowers,
and had tenderness in his smile without any shame,
only from his mouth, like a snake's, hissed the words:
Just leave your soul behind, it's not worth a thing,
many have given it to the devil for nothing at all,
A voice -- that's what's valuable today,
it will make you money -- no kidding at all!
I put on the muzzle for that voice of yours
and the guard locked me into a cage,
and even if you spoke a hundred times in the tongue of angels,
your voice would betray you!
Today I live like a prince in a palace,
I have horses in my stables and peacocks in my guarden,
I drink from bowls of gold and glasses of crystal,
but I don't have a radio and I can't stand the news.
Because whenever they speak of wars about love,
when the murderers celebrate and (I don't know)
when tyranny is defended with holy words,
when lies are proclaimed -- always in my voice.
My bed is soft, I drink the nights away,
I have a fish of gold in a pond of diamonds,
I have too much of everything, including pride and power,
I have it all in my palace, only people are lacking.
I glimpsed Satan today for the second time,
he is beautiful, although he has a rat's smile,
after all, I belong to him in voice and soul,
when I'm swinging from a branch...
