Y avait du soleil [English translation]
Y avait du soleil [English translation]
In all the racket of music
Mechanical pianos,
Electric merry-go-rounds,
One day at the festival of Saint-Cloud
In the midst of it all, I see a big guy
With a whole team.
Bang, egg and pan, the pipe,1
And the girl hit the bulls eye every time.
All around, we were having fun.
And since I was close by,
He offered me nougat, surpain. 2
At first glance, we were two friends.
It was sunny that day.
I keep seeing it all, it's been a long time already.
But it still makes my head spin.
He even laughed while leaving the festival
A little port wine, two fingers echo...
Tomorrow we'll see each other again darling...
I didn't want to fall into his arms,
Yes, but here we go...
It was sunny that day...
I keep seeing our first rides
On my motorbike, tranquil.
Him in front, me behind.
How great was the joy in my heart.
Especially our first Sunday,
Stopped under the branches;
He had free reign
To give me everything I wanted. 3
The sky was the ceiling,
So completely natural.
In the tender grass we first picked
Flowers, and then love again, again...
It was sunny that day,
And the lilacs, I keep seeing it all.
Like how he laughed on the thick grass.
Even his laugh was a caress.
It sang everywhere in the nest.
Me, I sighed: "This is heaven.
Tell me that we will never leave each other
As long as you want to..."
It was sunny that day...
La-la-la...
Tell me that we will never leave each other...
As long as you want to...
It was sunny that day...
1. This whole line makes no sense and various dictionaries and online searches on French idioms and the like were no help. So if someone can make sense of this, please do enlighten me. 2. Unfortunately, I have failed to find out the meaning of this word. All I can say is that cannot be anything sweet as I found two early 20th century books that suggest that you give it to your dog on google books3. Literally "To give me all of the happiness". I believe that bonheurs is used figuratively here and I find its figurative use tricky to translate. If someone has a better suggestion, let me know.
