Wind & Geige [English translation]
Wind & Geige [English translation]
A fiddle sang inside the hall,
She sang so wildly, so gently of love.
Outside, the wind sang through the branches:
"What is it that you want, child of man?"
The fiddle sang inside the hall:
"I want happiness, I want happiness!"
Outside, the wind sang through the branches:
"That is the ancient lay."
The fiddle sang inside the hall:
"Can it be ancient? It is new to me."
Outside, the wind sang through the branches:
"Many have yet died of regret."
The last fiddle note trailed off,
The lights in the windows flickered and died.1
Yet, for a long time,
In the dark woods the wind sang on and on.
1. Literally "the windows fell pale and dim" doesn't convey the same meaning in the context of the poetry
