1. the wordcatin has 4 meanings: (i) it's an affectionate term for a girl from a rural background (that meaning has been around for a couple of hundred years), (ii) a shop-window mannequin (that meaning is geographically restricted to Quebec, and I suspect it's pretty modern), (iii) a general purpose insulting term for a woman (probably derived from teh fourth meaning, and (iv) a prostitute (60 years ago this was a common use of the word; now it's rare, and dictionaries label this meaning as outdated or literary. I'm guessing the meaning here is (iii).
