Pulsars: Pulsars

David and Harry Trumfio are Pulsars. They are also brothers, and the sort of huge geeks who sing to computers ("Technology"), about Tommy Bartlett's Robot World ("Wisconsin"), and in praise of a pet robot ("My Pet Robot"). On paper, the whole thing isn't necessarily promising—the band is just a producer, his brother, a few bare-bones instruments and a lot of programming—but Pulsars' self-titled debut is lovably infectious, essential stuff. For starters, despite the heavy kitsch quotient of lyrics like "All tunnels are outta sight!" (from "Tunnel Song"), the songs themselves aren't just forgettable fluff: They're catchy, smart and endearing through and through. The duo delivers an ideal mixture of '80s pop-craft and '90s self-awareness, and the results are irresistible. It's just too bad that Pulsars' best song, "Chicago Swingers," from last year's introductory Submission To The Master EP, is inexplicably left out of this otherwise amazing full-length debut.
