Surmatun säkkeet [English translation]
Surmatun säkkeet [English translation]
The heart was blacker than charcoal,
A dark gaze in the eyes
Plague mangled every wretch,1
Gout afflicted the legs
There's a smell of death around
The air is thick with flies
Worms crawl along the skin,
Pus ran from the hands
Turn back from the karsikko2, placeless soul!
Your place isn't on earth
Return to the graveyard's rest!
You can't wander here anymore
Vipers slithered around the feet
The ground was black with snakes,
There the saw-patterned vipers hissed
Whispered temptations in the ear:
"Leave behind the underworld, step in the house of the living!
Let them taste revenge, the judgement of your icy hands!"
A flame of revenge burned the mind,
Eyes blazed with rage
The endless well of hate
Burned like a snake's poison
1. Or "every limb".2. Karsikko means a tree which is marked with a deceased person's name and date of death, for example. Trees used to be marked for the dead buried nearby and meant to keep them away from the living. If a soul wandered away from its burial place, it would realize it's dead when seeing its karsikko tree. The tree also pointed back towards the churchyard.
