1. Presumably King Arthur and his half-sister Morgan le Fay who were said in some literary sources to have been lovers in their young days. King Arthur was known to have another love affair with Morgan's younger sister Morgause who gave birth to his son Mordred. Morgan was a powerful sorceress and shape-lifter. Besides, she threw into the lake King Arthur's famous sword Excalibur he had entrusted to her keeping and which would have surely protected him in the last battle 8. One of the later legends has it that Morgan took dying Arthur to the Isle of Avalon and treated him to a drink from the Holy Grail and thus made him immortal 9.
