Biancodolce [English translation]

Here it comes the inevitable, umpteenth brick 1

Thrown by all radios and all TVs

You listen to it at any second, until you become stupid

The whiny melody of the Sanremo song 2

It drills into your head and it won't leave

It hammers on your brain, it's a slow agony

Where is the last end of this torture

Who's going to tear up this damned score

The SIAE,3 the INPS,4 the Settimana Enigmistica,5 the DIGOS 6

[Chorus]

From the Salento rises this popular song 7

We could never get rid of

These notes black and bitter, 8 like a curse

They come back, again and again, in every song

Three notes that might be as well played backwards

But they are not, and now I've got orchitis 9

They say music gets under your skin

But from my point of view, I've already got my b***sack full 10

Twenty years of songs with the same melody

Even Elio did it, but that was a parody 11

Someone built their whole career on this

I'm not talking about Negramaro

But Negramaro are a perfect example 12

Now think, before singing 13

Think, before getting people bored

Think of that poor guy that's going to listen to you

Think that that person might as well shoot you without even thinking about it

Caterina Caselli 14, the Illuminati, uncle Michele, 15 Beppe Vessicchio 16

[Chorus]

[instrumental]

1. "brick" is an Italian idiom for a lengthy and boring song, book, or movie.2. Sanremo is the most important Italian song contest. This song was released just before the beginning of the 2021 edition. The style of the songs usually played at this contest is considered by many to be outdated, boring, unoriginal.3. the Italian licensing agency, cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIAE4. the Italian national institute that provides pensions to Italian workers and other social security services, cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istituto_nazionale_della_previdenza_sociale5. the most famous Italian weekly magazine with crosswords and word puzzles.6. a special operational division of the Italian police.7. Salento is an area of the Italian Apulia region. The band parodised in this song (Negramaro, see the next note) comes from this area.8. "black and bitter" is a reference to the name of the Italian pop band Negramaro, whose name comes from a wine of the Apulia region (Negroamaro), which literally means "black and bitter". The title of this song is the opposite of Negramaro ("Biancodolce" = white and sweet).9. reference to an Italian idiom, "avere le palle piene" ("to have the ballsack full", meaning "to be really bored").10. see the previous note.11. reference to the song "La canzone mononota" ("The single-note song"), played by the Italian comic-rock band Elio e le Storie Tese at the 2013 edition of the Sanremo festival.12. reference to the lyrics of another Elio e le Storie Tese song, called "Complesso del primo maggio", in which they make fun of a traditional concert which takes place in Rome, on May the 1st. Those lyrics goes like "I'm not necessarily talking about Linea77, but Linea77 are a perfect example".13. parody of the lyrics of a song by Fabrizio Moro called "Pensa" (featured in the 2007 edition of the Sanremo festival): "think, before shooting, think".14. Italian singer, popular in the 1960s. She discovered Negramaro, the band parodised in this song.15. a reference to Michele Misseri, an Italian farmer from Salento (see note 7). When his 15 y.o. niece was found dead in 2010, he became one of the suspects and became known to the Italian public as "uncle Michele". He later confessed the murder of his niece, only to change his version various times. After a few days, he finally accused his wife and his daughter, the actual murderers; he had only tried to hide the body.16. Italian conductor, he became famous for his many appearances on the Sanremo festival. He’s lately become some kind of a meme and an internet celebrity. Many people praise him and declare that they only see Sanremo because of his presence (characterised by a grizzled beard and a jovial look).
